I want to wish everyone a Happy Fourth of July week-end (or had), but remember pets can hear things that humans wouldn't normally pay attention to. If your pet is showing signs of fear, there are some things you can try to calm them. There are non-prescription oral herbal products on the market with Chamomile. It would be comparable to us having a cup of Chamomile tea at the end of a long work day to relax. You can also try products with synthetic animal pheromones, i.e.: Feliway for cats and D.A.P. for dogs. These products come in sprays and plug-in dispensers and are available in most pet stores or through your veterinarian's office. They release a synthetic pheromone undetectable by humans but soothing to pets. In some cases a pet needs a prescription sedative available only through your veterinarian. These are just some suggestions from working in a veterinary hospital for over 20 years. ALWAYS refer to your veterinarian.
Have a wonderful and safe holiday week-end and please keep your pets in-doors while the festivities are happening. Sometimes scared animals will run away to hide and you might not be able to find them. Have your pet micro-chipped, more on this later.
