As a pet owner and lover, you've probably seen offers for Pet Insurance. The question is whether or not it's worth the monthly cost? Just like any insurance policies, you're hoping you never need it. Of course, auto insurance is required in all states. With health insurance, it covers your major costs in the event of a serious problem. And life coverage leaves the beneficiaries with something to help take care of them.

Pet Insurance: Something to consider? We all know that most pets don't live as long as humans, and tend to develop "old age" conditions earlier in life. Or an active critter may get injured in an accident. The costs to help treat your loved one can be more than you think. But if they end up with a major situation, the expenses can be higher than imaginable.

Just to describe our experience, our little dog developed a tumor on his head and it turned out to be cancerous. He is 12 years old, very active and happy, and the love of our lives. We would do anything to keep him happy and with us. The cost of the surgery, analysis, and CT scan were in the many thousands of dollars. Fortunately, we decided a while ago to take the risk on an insurance plan and they have been covering the majority of the costs. He will be going through radiation treatments soon and we'll try our best to keep him happy and as healthy as long as possible. The monthly policy costs are tiny compared to what they would have been without the coverage.

The plans don't cover everything.
The fireworks on the 4th of July might disturb your pets

I want to wish everyone a Happy Fourth of July week-end (or had), but remember pets can hear things that humans wouldn't normally pay attention to. If your pet is showing signs of fear, there are some things you can try to calm them. There are non-prescription oral herbal products on the market with Chamomile. It would be comparable to us having a cup of Chamomile tea at the end of a long work day to relax. You can also try products with synthetic animal pheromones, i.e.: Feliway for cats and D.A.P. for dogs. These products come in sprays and plug-in dispensers and are available in most pet stores or through your veterinarian's office. They release a synthetic pheromone undetectable by humans but soothing to pets. In some cases a pet needs a prescription sedative available only through your veterinarian. These are just some suggestions from working in a veterinary hospital for over 20 years. ALWAYS refer to your veterinarian.

Have a wonderful and safe holiday week-end and please keep your pets in-doors while the festivities are happening. Sometimes scared animals will run away to hide and you might not be able to find them. Have your pet micro-chipped, more on this later.

Please DO NOT leave your pet inside of a parked vehicle. Even with the windows down and parked in the shade, a car's interior temperature can reach dangerous heat levels in a very short time. A pet can easily collapse due to heat-stroke, dehydration, nerve and brain damage, etc. Also, remember if the window is down far enough your pet may be able to escape. I know we all like to take our "furry" friends for a ride, and trust me, they love to go for a ride, but during the summer months it's better to leave them home. If you think your pet has become over-heated, please seek emergency veterinary care immediately, it can be the difference between life or death. Please call your veterinarian's office to seek medical advice on what to do while you are driving to the vet hospital and to let them have time to prepare for your emergency arrival. In some states it is illegal to leave pets in parked vehicles! Please call 911 if you see a pet in distress in a hot, parked vehicle.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy summer.

I have been a veterinary technician for over 20 years and created the Kitty Kuddly, a bed/snuggle-bag for pets. This unique product is not just a bed, it is also a snuggle-bag to help "scoop" your kitty into a travel carrier, protecting you from kicking back claws. Everyone knows how much cats hate going into a carrier! Veterinarians even do exams in them, helping to keep the cat calm in a strange environment. My house is ruled by a "pound-puppy" named Gordie, a "pound-kitty" named Phatty, both adopted from The San Jose Animal Care Center and a Citron Cockatoo named Chickenhead. My company is linked with The Animal Care Center in San Jose, CA and we donate a portion of our proceeds to their "Guardian Angel" program. This program makes it possible for sick or injured animals to get the medical attention they need in order to be put up for adoption to find their "forever" homes. Working with animals day-to-day was my inspiration for the unique Kitty Kuddly. I made them to use in the vet hospital to bring comfort to the already stressed animals, but all of the pet owners wanted to buy them. I started my business, Kitty Kuddly, to make them available to everyone :-) They are angel sent on the "paws" of my much loved and missed "pound-puppy" Bryce, whom herself was adopted from a shelter on the east coast. The Kitty Kuddly is hand-crafted with integrity and TLC. When you purchase a Kitty Kuddly, you are not only giving your own pet a gift, but you are also giving a gift to a pet-in-need.

I am happy to announce we are now affiliated with PP4PA.com, Pet Professionals For Pet Adoption. I am a veterinary technician and see the everyday horrors of pets bought from "puppy/kitten mills." There are a lot of reputable breeders, but you must be careful. There are so many pets in adoption shelters looking for a "second chance" to find their forever homes. If not for pet adoption, we would not have our wonderful furry family members. If you are looking to add a furry friend to your family, please consider your local pet adoption center. Very often you can find pure-bred pets. They may not have AKC/CFA papers, but if you're set on a certain breed you might find your new family member.

<isc:description>I am happy to announce we are now affiliated with PP4PA.com, Pet Professionals For Pet Adoption. I am a veterinary technician and see the everyday horrors of pets bought from puppy/kitten mills. There are a lot of reputable breeders, but you must be careful. There are so many pets in adoption shelters looking for a second chance to find their forever homes. If not for pet adoption, we would not have our wonderful furry family members. If you are looking to add a furry friend to your family, please consider your local pet adoption center. Very often you can find pure-bred pets. They may not have AKC/CFA papers, but if you're set on a certain breed you might find your new family member.Penny ^..^ </isc:description>
